Darren Huckerby has labelled Joelinton as a ‘shambles signing’ on Twitter after his penalty kick was saved during Newcastle’s shoot-out win against Newport County on Wednesday night.
Joelinton didn’t start the League Cup encounter at Rodney Parade, but he came on after the hour mark for Andy Carroll.
Newcastle were trailing 1-0 at the time before Jonjo Shelvey pushed the tie towards penalties when his curling effort rippled the back of Nick Townsend’s net.
But when it came to the spot-kicks, Joelinton was the first man to see his effort saved by Newport’s man between the sticks and one-time Newcastle man, Huckerby, sent these messages.
Last summer, Newcastle, who haven’t been known to splash the cash under Mike Ashley, put £40 million on the table for Joelinton’s services [BBC Sport].
But he simply hasn’t been able to showcase why the Magpies put so much faith into him.
Added with that, the recent signing of Callum Wilson only signals that his time in the North East could be coming to and end.
His confidence looks well and truly shot and it would now be a huge surprise if that form can be lifted under the stewardship of the defensive-minded and robust, Steve Bruce.
