Harry Maguire has divided opinion since the day he stepped foot into the pressure cooker of Manchester United.
Following Manchester United’s 2-1 defeat to Fulham over the weekend, Chris Sutton was quick to defend Harry Maguire’s time at the club.
One Manchester United fan caller told the former striker that the £80 million signing has been ‘the poorest centre-half I have seen in my life’, as he told 606.
But Chris Sutton was quick to shut that down by claiming that it’s ‘ridiculous’ and ‘unfair’ on the 30-year-old.
In the summer, Erik ten Hag opted to strip Harry Maguire of the captain’s armband and handed it to Bruno Fernandes.
That didn’t help the player’s cause because it seemed to diminish his stance in the team and future going forward, despite talk of him possibly leaving, he stayed put.
All of that has been reflected in his game time this season, with Luke Shaw playing ahead of him at centre-half, that’s probably another reason why he is getting so much stick from his fans.
The many issues facing the England defender have been his inability to produce consistent performances, help the team progress and live up to his huge price tag, so it isn’t a surprise he is getting so much stick.
Harry Maguire criticism
Man United fan caller: “Maguire shouldn’t be there. The poorest centre-half I have ever seen in my life.”
Sutton responded: “That’s ridiculous. The poorest centre-half you said. That’s ridiculous and unfair.”
Man United fan caller: “If you played against Harry Maguire, then you would laugh.”
Sutton then added: “I think that’s really disrespectful.”

Harry Maguire should leave Manchester United
That defeat to Fulham has further dented Man United’s hopes of securing a top-four finish at the end of the season because they are now eight points behind Aston Villa.
The hope is that fifth spot opens up for Champions League football, but even then, they might find it difficult.
All in all, whatever happens in May, this has to be Maguire’s final season at Old Trafford because he needs to look at his long-term future.
At the age of 30, this is Maguire’s peak and he clearly isn’t good enough to guide his team to the title, which is where they want to be.
