The same old cycle is repeating itself with Manchester United after they fell to a very late 2-1 defeat to Fulham at Old Trafford on Saturday.
Many felt Marco Silva’s side, who opened the scoring through Calvin Bassey, then conceded an 89th-minute equaliser before winning the game in stoppage time, deserved the three points.
But not going by the comments from Harry Maguire and Erik ten Hag after the game.
The Manchester United duo felt ‘only one team was going to go on and win it’, whilst the manager hailed his side’s ‘big character’, as they told Optus Sport.
These comments and suggestions Manchester United played well or deserved anything from the match were quickly shut down by Alan Shearer, as he told MatchDay Extra on Premier League Productions (24/02/24 at 11:00 pm).
The Newcastle United legend made it clear ‘I couldn’t disagree more’ and explained how Fulham ‘deserved’ the win and ‘played much better’ during the 90.
This has been the story of Man United’s season, with their defence unable to cope with consistent attacks, as the team in general struggles to control matches.
Harry Maguire and Erik ten Hag’s comments
“I couldn’t disagree more with Harry Maguire and Erik ten Hag there,” said Shearer.
“I thought Fulham really deserved to win that game. They missed so many chances. Then, for Fulham to get the winner in the way they did in the last couple of minutes, I thought they deserved it. I thought they were the better team. Played much better and created more chances. And deserved the three points.”

Manchester United’s top four blow
Many felt Man United’s recent win at Aston Villa was fortunate given that they were outplayed during the game.
But three points were three points and it opened that top-four door for the team, but it has now been firmly slammed shut in their face again.
Whilst Man United were losing to Fulham, over in the Midlands, Aston Villa secured three points after they beat Nottingham Forest.
They are now eight points clear of sixth-placed Manchester United, which surely now leaves the battle for fourth spot between Tottenham and Aston Villa.
