‘That can’t happen’: Martin Keown fires warning to Arsenal about Manchester United

Manchester United have the chance to close the gap on Arsenal to within three points at Old Trafford on Sunday and Martin Keown has warned his former side ‘that can’t happen’, as he told Football Focus.

Arsenal are sitting top of the Premier League tree and can go four points clear of second-placed Manchester City if they secure all three points against their old rivals.

A number of weeks ago, Erik ten Hag’s side were well and truly in the mud, on the floor and trying to get themselves up from the canvas.

But it’s amazing what three points can do because United’s 2-1 win over Liverpool has now seen the Reds secure back-to-back 1-0 victories.

Can they muster a similar performance and result at Old Trafford? Well, they certainly have the past form, in this fixture, to do so, as well as a strong base from recent weeks.

Former Gooner Keown is pretty familiar with this fixture and has probably provided the most memorable of moments down the years, as he shared his thoughts on today’s game.

“Manchester United v Arsenal, always a significant fixture,” said Keown. “If United win this – they have just won their last three games – then they go within three points of Arsenal.

“That can’t happen. Arsenal need to come away with something and I think they are capable of that right now. They have really impressed me.

“Jesus above all else. He is the one setting the standards and Arsenal look completely different now going forward.”

Arsenal are further down the road than Arteta with their project, and for the first time in a very long time, they are looking like a formidable force.

There is a long way to go, but ten Hag requires the same level of patience and understanding as Arteta has received, and then there is every chance they could be competing for the bigger honours again.

Until then, a now pumped-up Manchester United have the chance to spoil Arsenal’s party and end the Premier League’s only-standing 100% record for the 2022/23 campaign.
