Taylor Fritz came away from his first-round win at the Dallas Open feeling positive about one particular aspect of his game.
He had been dealing with a knee issue during the Australian Open, which ended his campaign in the fourth round. Still, he moved up a spot in the ATP rankings despite falling short of his hopes in Melbourne.
Since then, Fritz has had some time to rest and recover. Now back on court, he’s not only feeling better physically but also highlighted a specific shot from his win over Marcos Giron that stood out to him.
Taylor Fritz singles out shot he hasn’t hit that well in years after Dallas win

Fritz came through a tough contest against his fellow American, beating Giron 6-4 5-7 7-6(1) in what was his first match since the Australian Open.
During the match, Fritz served up 21 aces but only managed two breaks of serve across the entire contest.
Despite not breaking once in the final set, Fritz said afterwards that he felt it was one of his best return sets in years. He made the comment during his on-court interview after the win over Giron.
“I know it sounds crazy because I didn’t break serve, but I think that whole third set is the best set of tennis I have returned,” Fritz said. “From a returning serve standpoint, that’s the best set I’ve played in years I think.”
Although he missed all four break chances in the decider, Fritz still found a way through by taking control of the tie-break to seal victory.
Taylor Fritz vs Brandon Nakashima head-to-head
After beating Giron, Fritz will now play another fellow American in his second round match at the Dallas Open.
This will be against Brandon Nakashima, who could pose a real threat to Fritz in his next match at the ATP 500 tournament.
Although Fritz leads the head-to-head against Nakashima 2-1, it is actually Nakashima who has registered more recently after he defeated Fritz at Cincinnati Masters last year 6-4, 4-6 and 7-6(4).
Nakashima hit another double-digit ace total during his first-round win over Mattia Bellucci and if this trend continues it could frustrate Fritz’s efforts to break him down over three sets.
