Arsenal fans have reacted on Twitter to Granit Xhaka drinking Coca-Cola minutes before Switzerland’s penalty shootout win against France at Euro 2020 on Monday night.
At the start of the tournament, there was that well-documented moment of Cristiano Ronaldo moving a number of coke bottles aside and replacing them with water bottles before one of his press conferences.
Well, Arsenal’s linked-away midfielder did the opposite last night and downed a bottle of the well-known drink just before penalties knocked the World Champions out of Euro 2020.
In one of the most remarkable games of the tournament so far, Xhaka led his country to a deserved win against the French.
It was a complete midfield performance from the 28-year-old, as he showcased aggression, drive, leadership skills, positive intent on the ball and provided that crucial assist for the equalising goal which took the tie to extra-time.
But it was Xhaka’s decision to enjoy a bottle of coke before the nervy penalty drama that caught the eye of the Arsenal supporters.
Switzerland are now through to the last eight of the tournament, but unfortunately for his nation, their midfield general will be suspended after picking up a booking during last night’s game.
There’s no doubt that Xhaka will be disappointed with that situation, but it’s probably worth it given the shock the Swiss have just caused.
