Liverpool fans have reacted on Twitter to Danny Ings seemingly deciding against signing a new contract at Southampton.
The 28-year-old, who left Liverpool for St Mary’s in 2019, turned down a new four-year deal, according to BBC Sport.
Ings has one year left on his current contract and could leave Southampton for free next summer.
But Liverpool fans have discussed the possibility of bringing his talents back to Anfield.
It wasn’t a lack of quality that hurt Ings during his spell on Merseyside, but serious injury after serious injury.
If it wasn’t for those months in the treatment room then it would have been interesting to see what he would have been capable of producing.
Albeit under less pressure, Ings has scored 46 goals in 100 games for the Saints, including 55 in 140 Premier League matches (transfermarkt).
That’s some going for a player rocked by serious injuries during his career.
But with Liverpool not being big-spenders like some of their Premier League rivals, sections of the Anfield faithful have admitted that they would take him back.
Jurgen Klopp needs depth in quality in his forward areas and at least another fresh face that can have the same impact as Diogo Jota did during his debut campaign.
Given that Southampton loaned Takumi Minamino last season, it has even been suggested that the Reds should use the Japan superstar to bring Ings back to the club.
It’s understandable if Liverpool fans are looking for a bigger name after struggling last season, even though they salvaged it all with a remarkable third-place finish.
But someone like Ings would be perfect for Klopp, with the Englishman displaying the ability to press without the ball to suit their system.
Burnley striker, Ashley Barnes, labelled Ings as a ‘magnificent’ player in 2019 and stated that he was ‘unfortunate’ during his time on Merseyside.
If Ings never played for Liverpool then it would have been interesting to see if the club would have pushed for his talents because his previous spell might be off-putting for some.
Either way, a striker of his quality is on the market and he has the capabilities to play in Europe.
It’s just a case of someone putting strong money down on the table for a player out-of-contract next summer.
