Tottenham Hotspur were reportedly keen on signing Cedric Soares, but how can Mauricio Pochettino justify a move for the full-back now?

While Mauricio Pochettino’s track record when it comes to turning somewhat underwhelming targets into stars is very impressive, alarm bells should have been ringing for the Tottenham fans when their reported interest in Cedric prompted a section of the Southampton supporters to suggest that they were welcome to take him.

The Daily Mirror reported last month that the right-back was one of the players on Pochettino’s radar ahead of the summer after a campaign where Serge Aurier seemed to struggle to settle and prove worthy of his £23 million price-tag.

Cedric has been a decent performer for the Saints, helping them stay up this term, and Pochettino may feel that he has the potential to step up significantly if he makes the move to Tottenham. But after the final game of the season and the day that followed it, Spurs surely have absolutely no reason to consider a move for Cedric this summer.

Aurier may have struggled throughout the season, but Kyle Walker-Peters came in for only his third Premier League start of the season when Leicester visited Wembley, and his performance was simply superb.

The 21-year-old – who claimed the man of the match award on the opening day of the season – was sensational against the Foxes, providing two goals and giving Pochettino plenty to ponder ahead of the summer.

His brilliant couple of days continued less than 24 hours later when the club confirmed on their official website that the defender has signed a new contract with Spurs that is set to keep him at the club until 2021.

Lining Cedric up for a potential move may have made sense before the Leicester game if Pochettino felt that he would improve the side. With Aurier struggling and Walker-Peters struggling for game-time, it would have been a gamble to sell Aurier and keep the latter as Kieran Trippier’s first-choice understudy.

But with the youngster proving once again that he is a serious talent, Pochettino should now look at the academy graduate as a player who has saved the club millions as targeting Cedric seems to make absolutely no sense.
