Sunderland’s Aiden McGeady previously admitted he’d love to return to Scottish Premiership champions Celtic.
Some Celtic fans were quick to write off Aiden McGeady when the veteran winger told the Daily Record back in November that he would be open to a return to the club where it all began.
“I would be happy to finish my career in a Celtic shirt, but I don’t think it will happen,” McGeady said.
The supporters seemed to agree. It is almost a decade since the 32-year-old left Celtic for a spell in Russia with Spartak Moscow and, unlike their Glasgow neighbours Rangers, there is no real trend of The Hoops bringing former players back for one last spell.
Celtic tend to sign players young and sell them for a profit – not 32-year-olds who are heading into the autumn of their career.
But McGeady’s recent form in the red and white of Sunderland shows that there’s life in the old dog yet. The former Everton star has scored 11 goals and produced six assists for Jack Ross’s side this season with his form in February particularly impressive.
On Thursday, it was announced that McGeady had won the League One Player of the Month award. And, to make his day even better, the experienced wideman has been handed his first call-up for the Republic of Ireland since 2017.
On this form, a return to Celtic doesn’t look like a bad idea after all.
