Aiden McGeady has scored three goals in two games for League One Sunderland – but could he return to the Scottish Premiership with Celtic?

Aiden McGeady may be 32 now but he showed that there’s still some sparkle in him yet.

The veteran winger has stepped up in style for Sunderland in recent weeks, scoring three times in his last two games including a match-winning brace in the 2-0 away win at Plymouth Argyle, capped by a trademark curling strike from the edge of the area.

McGeady is certainly rolling back the years right now – but he himself has admitted that a dream return to Celtic looks unlikely.

“I think the moment where I could have returned as Celtic player has passed,” the former Republic of Ireland international told the Daily Record.

“I would be happy to finish my career in a Celtic shirt, but I don’t think it will happen.”

And it seems that the majority of Celtic fans agree – the time for McGeady is over at Parkhead.

The Scottish-born winger began his career with The Hoops and shone north of the border during six years as Celtic’s go-to creative spark, lifting the Scottish Premiership title on three occasions and twice being named the club’s Player’s Player of the Year.

And even though Celtic are short on wingers with Manchester City loanee Daniel Arzani ruled out for the rest of the season with injury, you’d get long odds right now on Rodgers making McGeady’s dream come true.
