Nedum Onuoha has claimed that it’s a ‘shame’ that Tottenham and Chelsea transfer target, Raheem Sterling, wants to leave Manchester City this summer, as he told ESPN.

The former Manchester City defender added by saying that Sterling has been ‘such an important player’ for the club over the years.

With Sterling seemingly becoming available in the 2022 summer transfer market, it has alerted a number of clubs, including those in his hometown of London.

But it seems as though Chelsea are leading the race ahead of Tottenham to sign the England international.

Whatever happens with Sterling, he will go down as a Man City legend, as Onuoha shared his thoughts on his future.

“I think it would be a shame,” said Onuoha. “But I understand it. In years gone by, he has been such an important player for the club.

“Whereas, you would argue, during the last two seasons, when you see him out there, some people say ‘shouldn’t someone else be playing instead of him’.

“I think that must be a tough position for him to be in. You look at the contract he has got, he has one-year left. I think, for Man City, if this is a player that wants to play more football, then they have to weigh up that sort of decision.

“It’s a shame because he scored over 100 goals for Manchester City – he has played a huge part in the success they have had over the years.”

STERLING’S SIGNING WOULD BE A GAME-CHANGER

The suggestion is that Sterling’s form has dipped off during the last two seasons, well that is true.

But when you set the standards he has, then even his so-called ‘drop-off seasons’ are much better than what others can produce.

During the last two seasons, from his 96 games in all competitions, he has scored 31 goals and supplied 18 assists.

The drop comes from the previous season when he scored 31 in 52 and 25 from 51, the season before that.

Either way, his possible signing, for wherever Sterling ends up, will be a game-changer and a statement of intent.
