Some Liverpool fans are reacting to a report about Xherdan Shaqiri from Italy.
According to Corriere Dello Sport, the Reds are prepared to terminate the Swiss star’s contract so that he can join Lazio for free.
Shaqiri dazzled with his country during Euro 2020 and with two years left on his contract, letting him leave for free is an odd move by Liverpool.
Here’s how some fans reacted to it on Twitter:
Right to go
It doesn’t seem to make sense but, on the flip side, terminating his contract would save the Anfield club some £10 million in salary.
In any case, leaving Liverpool is absolutely the right decision for the player, if he does indeed go.
At 29, Shaqiri, who started only five Premier League games last season, is still in the prime of his career and there’s a lot of clubs who would absolutely love to have him on their books.
The problem on Merseyside is that although he’s a class footballer, he isn’t more effective than Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane or Diogo Jota and therefore he just isn’t going to play regular next season or beyond.
Shaqiri joined Liverpool from relegated Stoke City for a bargain £13 million in 2018.
