It looks like Xherdan Shaqiri is set to leave Liverpool.
According to Corriere Dello Sport, referenced by The Mirror, the Switzerland international will be released from his contract at Anfield.
The report claims that there is a ‘greenlight’ and that Liverpool will drop the player for ‘almost zero’ amid speculation of a move to Lazio this summer.
Shaqiri started only five Premier League games under Jurgen Klopp last season and a parting of ways seems logical.
Bear in mind that the former Bayern Munich star – who earns £80,000 per week in England – is still only 29 and still has some peak years left in his career.
And it would’ve been a major shame had he spent those years rotting on the Liverpool bench.
£10 million saved?
Releasing Shaqiri from a contract that has two years left to run seems like a strange move.
But on the plus side, Liverpool will save themselves almost £10 million in wages between now and 2023.
And the good news is that it may force Klopp and Michael Edwards to sign a replacement.
There is talk of the German manager promoting Harvey Elliott but, being only 18, it would be a major risk if the Reds didn’t sign another wide player, in the event that Premier League football proves too big for the former Fulham yet.
