Back in 2021, Nottingham Forest attempted to sign Cyriel Dessers, only for Feyenoord to beat them to the striker’s signature.

The 27-year-old even admitted that Forest made contact with him during the summer transfer window, before his move to the Netherlands.

Now, Steve Cooper will surely be devastated that Chris Hughton couldn’t get a deal over the line, as Dessers has shot to stardom.

What’s the story?

Well, the Nigeria international was involved in the UEFA Conference League final on Wednesday, where Feyenoord lost 1-0 to Roma.

Dessers was understandably gutted by the result, although he did leave Albania with some form of silverware in his suitcase.

The Leuven-born forward finished as the top scorer in the UEFA Conference League this season, scoring ten goals in 13 appearances.

Dessers beat Arsenal target Tammy Abraham to the award by one goal, and he deserves huge credit for outdoing some of the best strikers in Europe.

If Forest are still watching, they will surely be kicking themselves for not bringing the Feyenoord No.33 to the City Ground.

Now, his price tag has surely skyrocketed from what it was in 2021.

Nottingham Forest could still sign Cyriel Dessers

In our view, the saga involving Forest and Dessers may not be over yet.

If Cooper can guide Forest to the Premier League on Sunday, then we believe there could be another attempt to sign the UEFA Conference League gem.

In that specific scenario, Forest will have money to spend, and will be in need of reinforcements as they attempt to survive their first season back in the Premier League.

It would also be a real statement if Cooper moved to sign the UEFA Conference League top scorer, one which would get the fanbase excited.

Whatever happens, it is encouraging that Forest identified a player who went on to become a European top scorer.

If the scouting continues to be that good this summer, then they should have no problem staying in the Premier League – if they beat Huddersfield, that is.
