Under Michael Edwards, Liverpool’s transfer business has been nothing short of immense.

Edwards has masterminded more unbelievable deals for Liverpool down the years than you can shake a stick at.

But in the case of Taiwo Awoniyi, well maybe – just maybe – the Reds haven’t really gotten the better end of that deal.

The Anfield outfit sold the Nigeria international to Union Berlin for a paltry £6.5 million last summer.

And considering that the 24-year-old has just scored his 19th and 20th goal of the season this past weekend, well you might be able to argue that this is one of those rare occasions when Liverpool had their pants pulled down.

Say what you like about German football not being as difficult as the Premier League and dominated by Bayern Munich every single season.

But if you’re a 20-goal striker in that part of the world, before your 25th birthday, your ceiling for improvement is massive and over the coming years it’s entirely possible that this will haunt those on Merseyside for quite a while.

Better than Origi

With Divock Origi leaving Liverpool this summer – and likely to join AC Milan – Jurgen Klopp is probably going to need another number nine to arrive at some point during the upcoming transfer window.

And you wonder whether Klopp, who surely keeps an eye out for goings-on in the Bundesliga, will be lamenting the club’s decision to offload Awoniyi.

Keeping Awoniyi last summer and selling Origi instead might’ve been the better play long term and you get the impression that the former Liverpool striker is only going to get a lot better from here on out.
