Gabby Agbonlahor has explained that he just ‘doesn’t get’ Arsenal and Mikel Arteta’s transfer call in wanting to sign Chelsea forward Kai Havertz and how it’s all ‘strange’.

The former Premier League striker added that Arsenal fans have told him that they are ‘baffled’ by their club’s pursuit of the 24-year-old, who struggled at Chelsea last season, as he told talkSPORT.

If Kai Havertz makes his expected move to the Emirates, then he will be the third Chelsea player to join the club under Mikel Arteta’s stewardship following the arrival of Jorginho in January and that now unforgettable spell of Willian’s.

It has been claimed that the Gunners have paid their London rivals ‘£65 million’ for the German international, who scored the winning goal in the 2021 Champions League final, but only netted seven Premier League goals last term.

That’s a big sum of money for a player that is dividing opinion amid suggestions that the Premier League title challenges don’t need his services because they have the likes of Gabriel Jesus and Martin Odegaard.

Agbonlahor thinks that Arsenal need a ‘clinical striker’, not a player of Havertz’s qualities, as he expressed his bewilderment at it all.

“I don’t get it,” said Agbonlahor. “I am baffled. I have a lot of Arsenal fans as friends and they are baffled. Arsenal need a clinical striker, who is going to score you 20 league goals. He’s not that guy, Havertz. Strange.”

Havertz adding depth

The German star will be bulking up Arteta’s squad, and for sure, making their bench stronger as they push for the Premier League title again.

Arsenal don’t need a ’20-goal’ striker because they have plenty of goals in their forward line with the likes of Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli and Martin Odegaard.

If these two (Saka and Martinelli) want to go into the ‘world-class’ category, then they need to hit those big goalscoring numbers again next season, and in order for them to do that, they need to be on it themselves, but the team also needs to perform and Havertz will make Arsenal, as a team, better, or at the very least, maintain their high quality, and that will then allow their two wide players to thrive again.
