Former Celtic striker Chris Sutton has sent a message to Steven Gerrard as Rangers this morning confirmed the ex-Liverpool captain’s departure to Aston Villa.
Posting on his official Twitter account, the BT Sport pundit praised Gerrard for the work he had done for the Glasgow giants as well as raising the overall profile of football in Scotland. The ex-Rangers boss won the SPL title last season as well as took the Gers far in Europe.
The blue side of Rangers made it to the Round of 16 of the UEFA Europa League as Gerrard’s side won plaudits from neutral supporters and pundits about their style of play. The former England international also took the Scottish giants unbeaten in the league last season.
Indeed, losing Gerrard at this stage of the season will be a huge loss for Rangers. The SPL title race is the tightest and most exciting it has been in years. And for Sutton, the former Blackburn Rovers star believed the new Villa boss did a good job in Scotland.
Sutton posted on Twitter: “Good luck to Steven Gerrard at Aston Villa. He was great for Scottish football and raised its profile.
“He will be a big loss to Rangers. Stopping Celtic winning 10 was a big deal, but Callum Davidson did win more trophies than him over the time.”
Rangers have got to get next appointment right following Gerrard exit

A manager as good as Gerrard leaving halfway through the season will be a blow for any club. But for Rangers, it will sting just that much more given all the former Liverpool captain has done.
Indeed, the pressure now lies with the Rangers board, who now face the difficult task of appointing a successor to Gerrard. However, with the international break in full swing, time is on their hands to find the right man to take over at Ibrox.
