Former Arsenal defender and Highbury legend Lee Dixon has backed the club to sign Everton striker and England international Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, the ex-right-back suggested that the Gunners should make a move for the Toffees star in 2022. Arsenal are likely to sign a striker in the New Year with as many as four players in the position potentially leaving.

Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah’s contracts both expire in the summer, whilst the future of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is in the air after the striker was this month stripped of the captaincy and dropped from the squad.

With Folarin Balogun also likely to leave on loan, a striker is needed for the Gunners in the New Year. And to Dixon, Calvert Lewin could be a suggestion for Arsenal.

As reported by the Daily Mail, Mikel Arteta’s side are keeping tabs on the 24-year-old, with Everton demanding £60m for Calvert-Lewin, and for Dixon, the Gunners should make a move for the striker.

The Arsenal icon said: “Would I like to see Calvert-Lewin at Arsenal? I think yes. I think you’d struggle to get one of the top, top strikers like [Erling] Haaland. It would be a step up for Calvert-Lewin, no disrespect to Everton.

Dixon added: “I like him, I think he’s got the potential to be as good as he wants to be. He is fit and athletic, he is strong and good in the air and a good finisher. I would take him.”

Indeed, signing a striker will be one of the most important things Arteta and Edu Gaspar do in 2022. Yet for Arsenal fans on social media, they are not sold on Calvert-Lewin.

Here’s what some Arsenal fans had to say on Twitter about Dixon’s comments on Calvert-Lewin on Twitter…
