New Tottenham Hotspur boss Nuno Espirito Santo will be moulding his squad – and it now looks like Steven Bergwijn will be staying put after all.
Bergwijn made a huge impact after arriving from PSV Eindhoven in January 2020, but gradually fell out of Jose Mourinho’s plans last season.
The 23-year-old showed what he can do with a stunning goal against Aston Villa under Ryan Mason, but was then left out of the Netherlands squad for Euro 2020.
That left Bergwijn in a tough position. His lack of game time at Tottenham had seen him fall out of favour on the international stage, and that just isn’t good enough for him.
A potential escape route emerged; the Daily Mail reported last month that Ajax were pushing to sign Bergwijn, who was born in Amsterdam and spent two years in the Ajax ranks.
Tottenham were reluctant to sell, and would at least want their £27million back just 18 months after signing him.
Now though, it looks like Bergwijn – branded a ‘top player’ by teammate Ben Davies – is staying at Tottenham after all.

Ajax have agreed a deal to sign Feyenoord’s talismanic winger Steven Berghuis, raiding their rivals to strengthen their wide options.
It had been reported in May that Ajax wanted either Berghuis or Bergwijn, and would be going strongly for the latter – but Berghuis has come for a fraction of the cost.
With Antony, David Neres and Dusan Tadic also in the squad, it seems very unlikely that Ajax will now be chasing another winger in Bergwijn once Berghuis is on board.
Nuno will surely be happy about that, and Bergwijn will be looking to put the rumours behind him and really show how good he can be next season.
