According to the Daily Mail, Ajax are pushing to sign Tottenham Hotspur winger Steven Bergwijn this summer, but Spurs don’t want to sell.
Ajax are already set to sign one winger with Nordsjaelland star Kamaldeen Sulemana nearing a move, but that isn’t stopping them from going for Bergwijn.
They’re still keen to lure the Dutchman back home, but they’re seemingly not going to find it easy to prise him away from Tottenham.
Tottenham stand firm on Bergwijn
Tottenham paid £27million to sign Bergwijn from PSV Eindhoven in January 2020, so they would surely be looking for a huge chunk of their cash back.
Spurs are described as being ‘reluctant’ to sell Bergwijn, but Ajax are still trying to make an ambitious move to lure him back to Amsterdam.
The 23-year-old may have made his name with PSV Eindhoven, but he was born in Amsterdam and spent time in the Ajax youth ranks before leaving in 2011.
Playing time has to be the key for Bergwijn. He missed out on a spot at Euro 2020 and has now targeted being back in the Netherlands squad for the 2022 World Cup.
To do that, he needs to be playing. Ajax are seemingly aware of his wishes and want to give him the first-team football he’s seeking – but Tottenham just won’t budge.
Why are Tottenham so reluctant?
Bergwijn only started 13 league games last season, and ended the campaign with one goal and three assists in the Premier League.
That’s not outstanding, but Bergwijn definitely has pace and the ability to finish, as we saw with a superb strike against Aston Villa before the end of the season.
Tottenham seemingly believe that there is still a player in Bergwijn, who was described as ‘one of my boys’ by Jose Mourinho and a ‘top player’ by Ben Davies.
Mourinho’s exit may end up helping Bergwijn though, as he will hope to play more under Tottenham’s new manager, whoever that may be, instead of head back to the Eredivisie just 18 months after leaving.
