Liverpool fans are hoping that their club can add some last-minute spark to their underwhelming summer transfer window.

On one hand, some think that the new manager Arne Slot doesn’t need to make many changes because the starting XI is strong enough and there is also bench strength.

But, on the other, it’s going to be a long old season for Liverpool and one area, in particular, needs to be added to.

You would think that the number six position is an area of concern, with Ryan Gravenberch and Wataru Endo the only ones who can really play that role, with Alexis Mac Allister having a mixed time in that position last season.

Martin Zubimendi was a man the Reds wanted, he would have fitted in perfectly and provided a lot of excitement to the team.

But Zubimendi rejected Liverpool and Steve Nicol played down the suggestion that it’s a concern if the club don’t fill that role before the summer transfer window slams shut on Friday.

Last summer, Liverpool paid Bayern Munich £34 million for Gravenberch’s services and he is now expected to play that number six role, like he has done for the opening Premier League games.

But Nicol provided a brutal assessment of the Dutch midfielder, amid the transfer blow involving Zubimendi, and how he has ‘done nothing’ since joining the club, as he told talkSPORT.

The Anfield legend refused to acknowledge the performances from the opening two matches because of the type of opposition he was up against.

“I don’t know if concerned is the right word,” responded Nicol on if Liverpool are done in the transfer market after Chiesa and Mamardashvili.

“I think it’s clear that they went for Zubimendi. That was the position they were looking to fill and they haven’t.

“I don’t know if it’s a kind of false dawn that Gravenberch, who for me has done nothing since he has come to the club, he has had a couple of decent games, but it’s Ipswich and Brentford. That’s the problem. If they are taking a chance on that, then that’s where they can slip up between now and the next transfer window.”

Liverpool making late deals

Federico Chiesa is set to join Liverpool and provide some much-needed excitement to the team’s forward line.

The Champions League side have also decided to look ahead and plan for the future in the goalkeeping department.

Liverpool have signed Giorgi Mamardashvili from Valencia, but have loaned him straight back to the Spanish giants ahead of his arrival next season.

And it seems as though that might be it, in terms of who they sign in Slot’s first season at the club.
