Brighton & Hove Albion’s newest midfield signing Mats Wieffer has explained his decision to move to the AMEX Stadium amid Liverpool’s interest.

Fabian Hurzeler, Brighton & Hove Albion’s new manager who replaced Roberto De Zerbi, has been given one of the most promising midfield signings in Europe.

Feyenoord midfielder Mats Wieffer was one of the most promising players in the middle of the park in his age group and HITC has been told that Liverpool were keen on the Dutchman.

The Reds’ interest makes a lot of sense with Liverpool manager Arne Slot getting the best out of him at Feyenoord, but the 45-year-old denied their interest in the midfielder over the weekend.

Wieffer explains move to Brighton

With Liverpool being one of the sides keen on the Dutchman, it was a surprise that Wieffer made the decision to move to Brighton.

Wieffer has been speaking to Dutch outlet RTV Rijnmond about the move to the Premier League and believes it was an opportunity he couldn’t turn down.

“Every now and then I have to pinch myself when I think back on the past two years,” he said.

“Becoming champion, playing the Champions League with Feyenoord, winning the cup, seeing De Kuip and Coolsingel in ecstasy: these are all things you dream of as a footballer. I feel lucky to have experienced it and to be able to work for such I was able to play at a wonderful club like Feyenoord.

“Of course I will miss the players, the staff and everyone else around the first team and it feels strange to say goodbye to the supporters and Rotterdam.

“But this is an opportunity that I cannot say no to.

“I am therefore very much looking forward to this new adventure, but before that happens, I would like to thank all Feyenoorders for the wonderful time.”

Wieffer could be a key signing for Brighton as Liverpool miss out

With Liverpool one of the sides who liked the 24-year-old, it appears Slot’s side missed out on the Dutchman.

Slot, speaking to Voetbal International, once said of the midfielder: “Mats Wieffer has made a mega leap in terms of development. I can really enjoy that.

“So big that, if he does that again, he will become the best player in the world. That is, of course, unrealistic for any footballer. But Mats can get even better.”

However, Liverpool’s priorities are not understood to be in the middle of the park with HITC reporting that the defence and an addition in attack are the priorities with Crysencio Summerville and Lutsharel Geertruida of interest to the Reds.

The midfield looks to be one area that the Reds are not actively pursuing a signing in with Stefan Bajcetic set to be given a chance under Slot during pre-season.
