Tottenham have reportedly lost the race for reported target Stefano Sensi, with the midfielder now close to joining Sampdoria on loan.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the 26-year-old midfielder will join the Serie A side, who currently don’t have a manager, on a straight loan until the end of the season.

90min have previously claimed that Antonio Conte was eager to reunite with his former Inter Milan midfielder this January. As per the report, the Spurs boss is a huge fan of Sensi, who now looks set to join Sampdoria ahead of a move to the Premier League.

Sensi featured heavily under Conte during their Scudetto-winning season last year. However, the midfield maestro has since fallen out of favour with Simone Inzaghi. The former Sassuolo star has only played 169 minutes of football.

Central midfield is a position that Tottenham could do with improving this January. Tanguy Ndombele is expected to leave, whilst Oliver Skipp and Pierre-Emilie Hojbjerg aren’t exactly dynamic enough to start every game this season.

Indeed, Sensi would have been perfect given his qualities on the ball as well as his no-nonsense attitude in defending. And Conte has missed out on an ideal signing this month.

Tottenham could regret allowing Sensi to join Sampdoria on loan

With eight caps for the Italian national team and a member of Conte’s title-winning side last season, it seems strange that Sensi has enjoyed such a fall from grace with Inter and that Sampdoria are the side to win the race for his signature.

After all, Spurs need a midfielder. And the 26-year-old could have been ideal to improve the quality of the squad as well as be a player Conte knows very well. Alas, Sampdoria have claimed Sensi in what is an impressive coup for the Serie A side.
