Championship side Luton Town are now exploring a last-ditch deal to loan goalkeeper Jed Steer from Aston Villa, as they look for late transfers that can help toward a play-off run.

That’s according to The Athletic [31/01, 11:12], who report there is a strong chance Steer moves club before Monday’s deadline. The 29-year-old has fallen further down the pecking order at Villa Park this month following the arrival of Robin Olsen on loan from AS Roma.

Steer now has a serious challenge for minutes, with Steven Gerrard hiring Olsen as Emiliano Martinez’s understudy. The 2013 arrival from Norwich City under Paul Lambert had already struggled to force his way into Gerrard’s plans this term before becoming third-choice, too.

Gerrard has so far only named Steer on the bench since replacing Dean Smith in November. Instead, the former England U19 international made each of his three appearances for the season under Smith. He featured in the league against Chelsea with Martinez unavailable.

So, Luton are now exploring if it is possible that Steer leaves Aston Villa on loan before the transfer deadline. Nathan Jones’ Kenilworth Road outfit sit 10th in the Championship after 27 games. But the Hatters are currently just six-points from the last of the play-off places.

Steer open to Aston Villa exit amid Luton transfer interest

Luton are enjoying a strong run of form to move into contention for a play-off spot. They have won four and drawn two of their last seven games, after two wins in the prior seven.

The Hatters have also kept three clean sheets in their last seven games to six goals allowed. Yet Jones still sees room for improvement with Steer, who Mark Bosnich has called ‘special’ after an inspired penalty shoot-out display to help Aston Villa into the play-off final in 2019.

Steer is now open to leaving Aston Villa on loan in the January transfer window, amid late interest from Luton. The Birmingham Mail report the shot-stopper will listen to offers in search of regular first-team football following Olsen’s arrival.
