Southampton are reportedly set to sign the Uruguayan defender.

Southampton’s Ryan Bertrand discussed the imminent arrival of Martin Caceres in an interview with Sky Sports on Wednesday.

Saints are said to be waiting on a work permit to sign the Uruguay defender, who is a free agent after leaving Juventus last summer.

Media reports claimed Caceres is set to earn up to £100,000 a week at St Mary’s – despite not having featured in a competitive fixture since February 2016.

Bertrand, though, is not at all concerned by his future teammate’s lack of action.

“(He’s got) experience, you know, and quality,” said the Southampton left-back. “He may have been injured but that doesn’t necessarily change the player, I’m sure.

“I’ve heard about as much as you guys, but if the deal was to go through he’d only strengthen the team and that’d be great, you know, he’s got great pedigree.

“And if we can get the best out of him he’d be a fantastic signing for the club.”

Southampton, who sold one centre-back, Jose Fonte, to West Ham United last month and have lost another one, Virgil van Dijk, to injury, are desperate to arrest a run of three successive defeats.

And it is claimed the superior financial package on offer from the Saints persuaded Caceres to snub Sunderland, Crystal Palace and AC Milan in favour of a move to the South Coast.

The 29-year-old has also played for Spanish sides Sevilla and Barcelona, and has been capped 68 times by his country.
