Genk manager Wouter Vrancken has hinted that Paul Onuachu could leave on deadline day, as Southampton seem to be edging closer towards signing him.
Journalist Jeunes Footeux had claimed that Manchester United, Everton and Aston Villa were also keen on signing the Nigerian striker.
However, the Saints were reported by Het Nieuwsblad to be working on a deal to sign the 28-year-old goalscorer as recently as on Monday itself.
Now, the Genk manager has given a subtle hint that Paul Onuachu could well leave the club, which could indicate that he is headed to Southampton after all.
Genk boss admits Southampton target Paul Onuachu could leave on deadline day
With Nathan Jones’ side in desperate need for a goalscorer due to Che Adams and Adam Amstrong’s continued struggles, one fully agrees with their pursuit for Onuachu, who has 17 goals in all competitions this season.
And now, Southampton fans can breathe a sigh of relief as Genk manager, Wouter Vrancken has hinted that Paul Onuachu could bid farewell to the club on deadline day.

“You never know what will happen. But I live very fiercely in the here and now. Paul [Onuachu] showed this morning that he likes being here, but I’m also not so naive as to think nothing more can happen today”, said the Genk manager, seemingly addressing the Southampton transfer rumours in conversation with Het Laatste Nieuws.
He continued, “An exciting day? I’m not looking too much ahead. Paul was very involved in the match preparation for Eupen and I am also counting on him tomorrow. There is nothing to be said about his attitude.”
“That [trying to convince him to stay] never makes much sense. We know what we have in common, that’s the most important thing.”
Southampton will hope that the hint given by the Genk manager comes to fruition, and Paul Onuachu signs for the Saints.
