Free-agent goalkeeper Mateusz Lis is undergoing a medical at Southampton as he closes in on a move to the Premier League outfit, Polish reporter Tomas Wlodarczyk says on Postsen’s Football Transfers YouTube channel.

With Fraser Forster set to be unveiled by Tottenham Hotspur – and with veteran Willy Caballero set to depart – a new shot-stopper is one of Ralph Hasenhuttl’s top priorities ahead of what should be a busy summer of incomings and outgoings at St Mary’s.

25-year-old Lis, however, will not take Forster’s place in the starting XI.

The former Poland U21 international, who left Altay following their relegation from the Turkish Super Lig, should sign a five-year deal on the banks of the Solent but will spend next term out on loan, potentially in France.

“Mateusz Lis is in England and is undergoing medical tests in Southampton,” Wlodarczyk says.

“He will not be competing for a position number one or two at the English club. The plan is that he will be loaned out straight to France, possibly to Ligue 2 with Le Havre.”

It is not certain at this stage why Southampton plan to farm Lis out on loan for the 2022/23 campaign. Perhaps a work permit will be difficult to obtain in the post-Brexit era, given that the former Lech Poznan man does not have a single senior cap at international level.

Interestingly, Lis is not the only Polish glovesman who will arrive on the South Coast this summer.

Bartlomiej Dragowski is a long-time target for the Saints and could finally arrive after falling out of favour at Fiorentina.

“Bartek Dragowski is currently not playing. But he is to leave Fiorentina in the summer and move to another league,” confirms Poland coach Czeslaw Michniewicz.

“There, he will be the first-choice goalkeeper (at his new club).”
