Mateusz Lis is in ‘advanced talks’ over a move to the Premier League with Southampton offering the former Altay goalkeeper a long-term deal at St Mary’s, Polish reporter Tomasz Wlodarczyk tells Meczyki.
A 25-year-old shot-stopper who’s name translates as ‘Matthew Fox’ may have been forgiven for feeling a little Lost after he departed recently-relegated Altay in rather acrimonious circumstances a couple of weeks ago.
But Lis certainly won’t be on the breadline for long.
Reports on Thursday claimed that Southampton are set to make the former Wisla Krakow man their first signing of what could be a busy summer of incomings and outgoings on the banks of the Solent.
And Wlodarczyk, one of the most respected sports journalists in Poland, has now backed up those claims.
“It’s true. He is to get a four- or five-year contract with the Saints. Advanced talks are underway,” the reporter says. “He will be immediately loaned to another club.”
Mateusz Lis will be Southampton’s new goalkeeper
6ft 4ins Lis has played for Poland at youth level but is yet to represent his nation at senior level.
The lack of international caps may be the reason why Southampton plan to loan him out for the 2022/23 season, with post-Brexit regulations making obtaining a work permit more difficult than ever before for players arriving from Europe.

Interestingly, Lis is not the only Polish goalkeeper on his way to St Mary’s.
- How Rangers’ XI could look in 22/23, including 5 new signings
- How West Ham’s XI could look in 22/23 with 4 new signings
Wlodarczyk claims that Southampton will also complete a bargain deal for Fiorentina’s Bartlomiej Dragowski. The brawny, bearded glovesman set a Serie A record when making a remarkable 17 saves during a goalless draw with Atalanta a couple of seasons back.
Dragowski should to be Southampton’s new number one, replacing the Tottenham Hotspur-bound Fraser Forster. Lis may act as a back-up option once he returns from a short-term loan spell.
