Nathan Redmond has endured a disappointing campaign, but his impact from the subs bench on Sunday couldn’t be ignored.
Southampton fans have taken to Twitter to praise Nathan Redmond for his performance from the bench in their 2-0 win at Wigan on Sunday.
The Saints had taken a 1-0 lead, with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg breaking his duck on the hour mark, just three minutes before Redmond’s second half arrival for Sofiane Boufal.
Boufal, along with attackers Manolo Gabbiadini and Guido Carrillo, had put in toothless displays in the first half of action under new boss Mark Hughes.
Wigan dominated the chances in the opening 45 minutes as they looked to courageously upset the odds against another Premier League side, following last month’s 1-0 win over Manchester City.
Hughes made the call to bring 24-year-old Redmond on with 65 minutes on the clock and the England international’s clever through ball to Manolo Gabbiadini instantly saw the Saints awarded a penalty.
Although the Italian saw his spot kick saved, Redmond did grab himself an assist in injury time as his lofted ball to Cedric Soares was cleverly flicked on and finished with aplomb by the full back.
The Saints have now reached their first FA Cup semi-final since the 2002/03 season; despite an underwhelming league campaign.
