Southampton fans have reacted with joy after their forward Jay Rodriguez scored his first goal since his return from a long-term lay off due to multiple injuries.

It was an effort from distance by the 27-year-old that got him his goal, albeit one that slightly fortuitously crept under Sunderland goalkeeper Jordan Pickford; not that Saints fans were unduly bothered about the touch of good fortune.

Rodriguez’s goal was an important one in the game for Southampton, a precious equaliser after Jermain Defoe had put Sunderland ahead from the penalty spot at St. Mary’s.

The result has left Southampton 15th in the league table, having picked up two points from their first three outings this season.

Rodriguez has been linked with a move away from the club in recent days, with West Brom said to have been hopeful of tying up a loan deal for the star.

Claude Puel appeared to suggest on Friday that he could be willing to loan out the forward, but it now seems as though the player could be involved in his plans this term.

Whilst the result has appeared to have slightly disappointed Saints fans, they were quick to give praise to Rodriguez for his comeback strike.

Saints fans have also reacted with surprise to the news that Rodriguez still may be loaned out of the club for this year.
