Southampton's Jay Rodriguez heads at goal

West Bromwich Albion are aiming to tie up the signing of Southampton striker Jay Rodriguez on a season-long loan by the weekend, according to the Birmingham Mail.

The Baggies have discussed a deal to bring the one-time England international to the Hawthorns, and the two clubs are now believed to be in ‘advanced discussions’ over the switch.

Albion want to add a new striker to provide competition for Salomon Rondon and Saido Berahino, and they have earmarked Rodriguez as a quality and versatile option.

The 27-year-old, who has also been known to play off the main striker as well as in central and wide attacking midfield roles, has been seriously hampered by injury in recent years.

Rodriguez missed the entirety of the 2014-15 season with a cruciate ligament injury and his return to fitness lasted just 12 matches last season before a different problem sidelined him.

However, he undoubtedly has the quality to make a difference for Albion if he can stay fit, having scored 17 goals in 39 appearances in the 2013-14 season before being struck down by his first injury problem.

Newly-promoted Premier League side Hull City had been credited with an interest in the former Burnley man, but with Albion willing to offer the player a good deal and having a considerable head start on negotiations, it appears Albion are best placed to get their man.

The Birmingham Mail reports that Tony Pulis’ side are hopeful of getting the deal signed and sealed before the weekend.
