Although they did manage to bring the Italian to the club, there was plenty of frustration amongst Saints supporters after they failed to add another defender to their ranks before the deadline.
Southampton manager Claude Puel
Former captain Jose Fonte was allowed to leave for West Ham earlier in the window, and their back-line was left even more exposed when Virgil van Dijk picked up an injury against Leicester that manager Claude Puel has suggested will keep him out for weeks (via Sky Sports).
That has left Southampton with the likes of Maya Yoshida and Florin Gardos – both of whom have come in for plenty of criticism during their St Mary’s careers – and youngster Jack Stephens to select from until the Dutchman returns, which is especially worrying given that the EFL Cup final is this month.

The supporters’ frustrations were not helped by the fact that they were beaten 2-1 away at relegation candidates Swansea City during the final hours of the window, which confirmed for many supporters that the Saints are taking a massive gamble letting the window close without getting more bodies in.
