Matteo Guendouzi is heading back to Arsenal, but for how long?
The French midfielder bid a public farewell to Hertha Berlin on Twitter yesterday following a season-long loan in Germany.
Guendouzi was loaned to the Bundesliga club after falling out with Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta.
The 22-year-old is now due back in North London but only for a short time, it would seem.
Speculation is rife that Guendouzi is going back to France to join Ligue 1 outfit Marseille.
According to L’Equipe, his relationship with Arteta has been ‘ruptured’ and a long-term stay at Arsenal under the Spaniard just isn’t going to happen.
On Thursday he paid a lengthy tribute to Hertha on Twitter and some Arsenal fans are begging him to stay at the Emirates Stadium:
Risk?
It’s a brave move by Arteta.
Okay, he’s perfectly entitled to not want to work with Guendouzi if there’s attitude problems on the player’s part, which there reportedly are.
But by the same token, Arteta has just overseen Arsenal’s worst season in two decades.
There’s big pressure on the former Manchester City assistant, whose side finished eighth last term, and this is the type of move where if Guendouzi dazzles in France then it’ll be an awful reflection on Arsenal, especially in light of speculation that he’s leaving for only around £12 million.
