Some Arsenal fans on Twitter are feeling pessimistic about their chances of signing James Maddison.

Journalist Pete O’Rourke revealed this week that the Gunners were confident of signing the Leicester City playmaker.

Earlier in the week, the Daily Mail reported that Arsenal were set to ramp up their efforts to bring the England international to the Emirates Stadium.

But some fans of the North London club have spotted a clue that it isn’t going to happen.

On Thursday, Arsenal signed Emile Smith Rowe up to a new deal – and interestingly, gave him the club’s famous number 10 shirt.

This is the same number that Maddison wears under Brendan Rodgers and some Gooners believe that they wouldn’t have given it to Smith Rowe if there was a realistic hope of signing the City star.

Here’s what they’re saying on social media:

Magic

Despite signing Smith Rowe to a contract extension, another number 10 is definitely needed.

Even if Arsenal don’t sign Maddison, they absolutely need another creative spark in midfield.

Remember, Smith Rowe and Martin Odegaard – who has returned to Real Madrid – both made Mikel Arteta’s first XI during the second half of last season.

What this means is that technically, Arteta is still down a creative player irrespective of Smith Rowe’s extension.

Scoring goals was a major problem for Arsenal last term and if Arteta and Edu don’t sign a wizard, magic will be minimal once again.
