With the raw anger over the USMNT’s early World Cup exit still simmering, fans have now turned their frustration toward MLS.
Major League Soccer is scheduled to officially resume regular-season play on July 16–17, immediately following the World Cup semifinals. The league took a unique six-week pause to accommodate the tournament, but domestic action returns to the pitch just days before the final takes place.
No MLS team actually plays their regular home matches at MetLife Stadium, so it shouldn’t affect things when it comes to the 2026 World Cup final.
The local teams, the New York Red Bulls and New York City FC, both have their own home venues.

Soccer fans wanted the MLS advert released during the World Cup
You can’t help but feel like the buzz of the MLS returning would have been at its peak during the USMNT‘s hyped charge during the 2026 World Cup.
And that’s exactly how most supporters feel.
This supporter brought up the timing: “Love the ad, but would have loved it during the USMNT games.”
“@thesoccerdon… You wasted the golden opportunity… MANY TIMES. I wish you would do an interview where people asked you real questions and pressed you on the lack of ambition,” another fan said.
Another supporter agreed: “Should’ve aired earlier during the World Cup.”
“Love the ad, but it would’ve been nice if it had aired throughout most of the World Cup instead of being released less than four days before the MLS returns,” this fan made a valid point.
The star-studded “Thanks World, We’ll Take It From Here” advert showcases MLS owners Kevin Durant, David Beckham, Matthew McConaughey, and Magic Johnson.
Set to a classic hip-hop track, the commercial features Lionel Messi and global stars in the hope of transitioning fan hype from the World Cup back to domestic action.
