Paul Merson has said on Sky Sports News (12:37pm, April 24, 2021) that he has changed his mind about Newcastle United and Steve Bruce.

The former Arsenal and Aston Villa star, who now works as a pundit for Sky Sports, has said that Bruce cannot remain as the manager of Newcastle next season.

Merson said on Sky Sports last month that Newcastle expect to be in the Premier League top six, and that the fans need to be realistic and cannot live in the past.

The Englishman also backed Bruce, who is not very popular among the fans for his style of football.

Merson has now said that he has changed his mind about Newcastle after the fans made contact with him on social media.

The Englishman said on Sky Sports News (12:37pm, April 24, 2021): “I learned a lot about three weeks ago. I talked about Newcastle, then a lot on the platform from Newcastle fans got in touch with me.

“I sort of understood a lot more in that three weeks, if I am being honest. I don’t think he can go on. I think you have to listen to the crowd this time.”

Steve Bruce at Newcastle United next season?

Newcastle are unlikely to get relegated to the Championship at the end of the season.

It will be interesting to see what Newcastle owner Mike Ashley does regarding Bruce.

The football that the Magpies have played under Bruce has not been brilliant on most occasions.

However, if Ashley laid out the objective to Bruce to simply keep the club in the Premier League, then that aim looks likely to be achieved.
