David James has suggested that the sales of Jordan Henderson and Fabinho this summer from Liverpool to Saudi Arabia have made them ‘stronger’.

It was a surprise when the senior duo headed for the exit door because it wasn’t planned, but the powers that be on Merseyside had to accept the money that was put on the table from Saudi Arabia.

Yes, Jordan Henderson would have probably played a squad role under Jurgen Klopp this season and Fabinho’s form in Liverpool colours had gone out of the window, but the duo were still important figures on and off the field.

But, according to ex-goalkeeper, David James, Dominik Szoboszlai has been a ‘revelation’ which has helped make Liverpool Premier League title contenders this season, as he told The Football Show on Sky Sports (28/11/23 at 10:30 am).

The Reds recorded a 1-1 draw at Manchester City on Saturday – Nathan Ake made his feelings about Mohamed Salah clear after the match.

That point suited Jurgen Klopp and his players more, as David James is in no doubt that they can push for the Premier League’s main crown.

Liverpool without Henderson and Fabinho

“I’m not surprised,” said James. “Right at the beginning of the season, I thought the signings were right.

“A lot of midfield players were lost during the summer. Sometimes losing players makes you stronger because you don’t have to deal with so many in and out players, if you like.

“The likes of Szoboszlai, this guy is a revelation. He is a firm fan favourite already. I just think the way the team are playing, they are playing with confidence.

“Are they in a title rice? Absolutely.”

Liverpool’s midfield needs time

Everything around Liverpool’s midfield is more or less proven. From the goalkeeper to Salah, the fullbacks and someone like Virgil van Dijk.

It’s the midfield that is new and in need of proving that it can guide the team back to winning trophies.

So far, the signs have been pretty positive, especially from Szoboszlai, who looks like he would have fitted right into the Liverpool team that did win the lot.

And you think if that is to happen again, then he is going to be a key player in that midfield, it’s just that defensive brain needs to be added via the transfer market.
