West Bromwich Albion secured one of the biggest transfer coups in recent history when they signed Darren Fletcher on a free transfer two years ago.
Baggies skipper Darren Fletcher racked up his 300th Premier League appearance during his side’s 1-0 win over Stoke City on Saturday, and his former manager Sir Alex Ferguson spoke in glowing reference of the 33-year-old, as quoted by the club’s official website.
Should West Brom have tried harder to sign 54-capped international?
The experienced Scot moved to the Hawthorns in February 2015, when his contract expired with Manchester United, and has since gone on to establish himself as a vital member of the West Brom team, making 83 appearances in all competitions.
And Ferguson, who managed Fletcher for over a decade during his time at Old Trafford, highlighted the West Brom player’s professionalism and dedication as major factors behind his successful career, as quoted by WBA.co.uk:
Sir Alex Ferguson
“In his later years at United he had to deal with his medical condition. At that point I said we really need to look after him. At that stage we didn’t think he would make it in terms of his career. But with his will and purpose and the way he leads his life now is completely dedicated now to make sure he plays on a Saturday. Of course, I think the big break he got, although he wouldn’t want to say this, was leaving United.”

The Black Country outfit have performed admirably so far this season, and currently sit in eighth position in the Premier League table, just four points adrift of the Europa League spots, with qualification for Europe now a genuine possibility.
Fletcher shares where he think West Brom will finish
And it would be hard to argue that Fletcher’s influence on the team has not been a major contributing factor to their superb campaign thus far.
