Darragh MacAnthony has taken to Twitter after some outlets claimed that Crystal Palace had submitted a £4m bid for Tottenham target Ronnie Edwards.

What’s the story?

Well, the Peterborough defender is being monitored by a number of Premier League sides, with Aston Villa and Southampton also taking an interest in the 19-year-old.

One outlet claimed that Crystal Palace had made a £4m bid for the England Under-19 international, which MacAnthony – Club President of Peterborough – laughed off.

The 46-year-old tweeted: “Nobody was silly enough to put that kind of derisory bid in writing for young Ronnie so don’t believe all you read. The big clubs know us better than that.”

Clearly, MacAnthony wants a lot more than £4m for Edwards, who enjoyed a fantastic campaign in the Championship last season.

Despite the Posh dropping into League One, the teenager made 38 appearances in all competitions as he made his mark on the first-team in some style.

Back in April, Barry Fry – Director of Football at Peterborough – admitted that an unnamed Premier League side did make a bid for Edwards, which was believed to be in the region of £2m.

Unsurprisingly, that was rejected.

In our view, a move to Crystal Palace would be better for Edwards than a move to Tottenham at this stage of his career.

Spurs are targeting the likes of Alessandro Bastoni, Sven Botman and Gleison Bremer as Antonio Conte prepares to lead Tottenham in the Champions League, while he already has Eric Dier, Cristian Romero and Ben Davies.

Even Joe Rodon, who shone in the Championship with Swansea, can’t get any action at Tottenham, nor has he been loaned out, so we believe Edwards may see his career stall in similar fashion if he moves to north London.

At Selhurst Park, there is a strong core of young prospects such as Marc Guéhi, Tyrick Mitchell, Michael Olise and Eberechi Eze, all of whom receive plenty of chances under Patrick Vieira.

All of these players have also improved in south London, so if Edwards wants to continue developing, he would be wise to join the Eagles.
