Glenn Murray told Sky Sports Football (18/08/21 at 7:35 pm) that Aaron Ramsdale leaving Sheffield United for Arsenal will ‘probably be announced in the coming days’.
The 23-year-old was left out of the Blades squad that got beat 4-0 to West Brom on Wednesday night, as a move to Arsenal edges closer.
Not so long ago, it seemed like Arsenal weren’t going to get their man signed up this summer despite Ramsdale being made their number one goalkeeping target.
But after a tough few weeks, it seems as though he is heading towards North London and a £24 million fee has been agreed for his shot-stopping talents.
Former Premier League striker Murray thinks it is a ‘shrewd bit of business’ from Sheffield United to make a profit on the player.
“That speakes volumes (on Ramsdale being left out of Sheffield United’s squad),” said Murray. “I expect it probably will be announced in the coming days.
“How will it affect them? (Sheffield United). I don’t think it will affect them too badly. I think it’s a shrewd bit of business from Sheffield United to get more money than what they paid for him.
“I think the England call would have helped with that. It gives them a chance to re-introduce fees.”
Given the fee Arsenal have paid for Ramsdale, he surely can’t be coming into the side to warm the bench.
Yes, Arsenal needed two strong goalkeepers at their club, but if a possible £24 million signing is to be the second choice then those in the Emirates boardroom need to question themselves.
Either way, this is a pretty bold and risky move by the likes of Edu and Mikel Arteta because Ramsdale isn’t exactly a player who is flying high.
He has been relegated during the past two seasons and he is deemed England’s fifth-choice goalkeeper – he made Gareth Southgate’s Euro 2020 squad after injuries to Dean Henderson and Nick Pope.
