Speaking on the All to Play For podcast, Jermaine Pennant has stated that Diogo Jota has completely proven him wrong since joining Liverpool this summer.

The Portuguese attacker has come in at Anfield and become an immediate star under Jurgen Klopp, netting in each of his first five home games, while he’s also starred in the Champions League.

It seems as though Jota’s red hot start has caught Pennant off guard as he was expecting him to just come in as a backup option.

“He has to be fair, I didn’t know too much about Jota, I’ll be honest, and I think many people didn’t and I was shocked about the signing thinking ‘he’s just going to be a little backup if we get any injuries’, he’s just came in and he’s flying,” Pennant said

“I feel like he’s been there for ages, he’s a great talent, he can score, he can assist he’s got his pace and he can beat players.”

We can imagine that many Liverpool fans are in the same boat as Pennant.

It was unthinkable this time last year that any player would be able to come in and challenge any of Liverpool’s front three for a starting role, but Jota has made some serious waves since arriving at Anfield, earning plaudits from a number of pundits.

The Portuguese forward has been nothing short of exceptional, and what Pennant thought would just be a backup signing may end up being one of the best buys Jurgen Klopp has made in recent years.

Of course, it’s still early days, but when you consider that Jota is only 23 and he’s performing this well on a consistent basis, he’s looking like an absolute bargain.
