Tim Sherwood has told the Kelly & Wrighty Show that Newcastle United ace Miguel Almiron looks like a “superstar” under Eddie Howe, but a player that would have been sold by previous managers if they got their money back.

Almiron, 28, continued his wonderful form on Sunday, scoring the winner against Tottenham in a 2-1 win. It was his sixth goal of the season in 12 Premier League games for Newcastle. Almiron has five goals in his last five games.

The 41-time Paraguay international is in the form of his life. He is finally showing why Rafa Benitez chose to bring him to Tyneside almost four years ago. In that time, he has clocked up 135 appearances in all competitions for Newcastle.

Coming into the season, his time at Newcastle was under threat. He was hardly first choice under Howe. The Mirror said in the summer that Newcastle were ready to sell Almiron for £10million, £11million less than they paid for him.

But now, Almiron is easily first choice and one of the first picks in Howe’s side. His form has been immense this season. Finally, he has the confidence to go alongside his talent. Sherwood thinks he is becoming a superstar at Newcastle.

“Almiron looks like a superstar. Under previous managers, he looked like someone you’d want out of your club as soon as possible, if you could get your money back. You have to give Eddie all the credit,” Sherwood said.

Sherwood is probably right. Coming into this season, just 14 goals in 123 appearances for Newcastle is simply not good enough for a player that cost north of £20m. But his form this season makes him one of the league’s best so far.

Now, he is a player that is easily worth the cash paid for him. His value continues to rocket. Howe deserves enormous credit for turning Almiron into the player he is now. He is not the only example of a player Howe has improved.

Joelinton is thriving in midfield after Howe’s tactical change. Fabian Schar is first choice, Sean Longstaff is shining. Plenty of Newcastle players have improved when under-performing before he arrived on Tyneside.
