Shaquille O’Neal has explained why LeBron James was left off his All-Star reserves selection, offering a rationale rooted in respect rather than criticism.

The decision raised eyebrows given James’ continued production, but O’Neal made it clear that his thinking went beyond box scores or reputation.

Instead, the Hall of Famer framed his choice as a deliberate attempt to avoid an outcome he believes does not suit one of the game’s defining figures.

Shaquille O’Neal blames LeBron James’ decline on age

Speaking publicly in comments shared in a clip circulated by NBA Courtside, O’Neal outlined why he chose not to include James among his All-Star reserves.

“He’s one of a few players that’s only been slowed down because of the age. I don’t want to see the King coming off the bench. I spared the King,” O’Neal said.

The explanation positioned O’Neal’s decision as one driven by optics and legacy, rather than a reflection of James’ ability or impact.

By framing it this way, O’Neal suggested that his omission was meant to preserve James’ stature, not diminish it.

Shaquille O’Neal addresses LeBron James missing out as an All-Star starter

James’ absence from the All-Star starting lineup this season was the result of the league’s established voting process, which combines fan, player, and media ballots.

In the Western Conference frontcourt, competition for starting places was particularly strong, with younger stars receiving higher combined vote totals.

Despite remaining one of the league’s most recognisable players, James did not finish with enough weighted votes to secure a starting spot.

“Is he playing like an All-Star? Yeah, a little bit, but I don’t want to see the king coming off the bench. Thank you, King, for what you have contributed to the game, but I do not want to see him coming off the bench,” Shaq concluded.

For O’Neal, sparing James from a reserve role was a matter of respect, even if it meant leaving one of basketball’s biggest names off his list.
