Trevor Sinclair is reacting to hearing Fabio Carvalho is joining Liverpool.
Well, apparently.
The Guardian reported last month that Liverpool would be signing the Fulham sensation, who helped his club win Premier League promotion – and the Championship overall – this season.
The 19-year-old will be a top-flight footballer next season, but not with the Cottagers.
The London club’s vice-chairman, Tony Khan, revealed this week that a deal has been struck for Carvalho to join a Premier League club this summer – and with the speculation about Liverpool, it’s looking certain that he’s going to Merseyside.
Here’s what Sinclair told talkSPORT on Wednesday, reacting to Khan’s comments: “It’s a shame about Carvalho, because he’s going to Liverpool. He’s been instrumental to them and their success this season. But, if they get good money for them, and I believe they are.”
How much are Liverpool paying for Carvalho?
Well, Sinclair claimed the Craven Cottage outfit were getting ‘good money’ but is that the case?
In a word, no.
According to The Athletic, Liverpool will pay £5 million up front and an additional £2.7 million in various add-ons, making the total cost under £8 million.
That’s a good figure when you consider that his contract was expiring this summer anyway, but it’s absolute peanuts when you consider what he’s worth overall.
This is a stunning piece of business for Jurgen Klopp and although Carvalho won’t hit the ground running at Anfield, with Darren Bent suggesting that he’ll re-sign for Fulham on a season-long loan, he’s going to be a major player in the long term.
And to pay less than what Liverpool paid for Andy Robertson in 2017, yes it’s a cracking bargain.
