Wayne Rooney has claimed that if Arsenal beat Manchester United at Old Trafford, then they might have to take them ‘seriously’ for the Premier League title, as he told The Times.

Regardless of today’s result, Arsenal will remain top of the Premier League table after six games after Manchester City dropped points at Aston Villa on Saturday at Villa Park.

But if Mikel Arteta’s side can secure all three points against their old rivals, then they will move four clear of the current champions of England.

It’s still very, very early days, but in regards to the club’s goal this season, which is to secure a top-four finish, then it’s a serious confidence-booster.

On the other hand, Erik ten Hag’s side have won three on the bounce and they are on a little run of their own after a disastrous opening few matches for the club’s new Dutch coach.

But Rooney suggested that the Gunners are possible Premier League title contenders if they make it six from six in a few hours time.

“We’ve seen Arsenal start seasons well before only to fade,” said Rooney. “But if they win at Old Trafford people will start taking them seriously as contenders if not for the title then the top four.

“So it’s a huge test for them, but it’s also a big one for United, a chance to show Erik ten Hag has them on track.”

FEET ON THE GROUND

Arsenal simply can’t think too far ahead, even if they win their opening ten matches, yes it would be unreal, but their main aim is to still secure Champions League football.

You win nothing in September or October, the real business kicks in during the final few weeks of the season and Arsenal shot themselves in the foot during the backend of 2021/22.

With Europe returning to the Emirates, that in itself will be a test for the players because it will stretch a squad that is already being hit with injuries.

All of that is just around the corner because, after their trip to Manchester, it’s Switzerland-bound for the Gunners because they face off against FC Zurich in the Europa League.
