This weekend saw some huge clashes around Europe, yet none came bigger than Germany’s Der Klassiker between Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich, where Julian Brandt impressed.
The Dortmund playmaker, who Arsenal and Edu Gaspar reportedly wanted in June according to CalcioMercato, opened the scoring in what was to be an incredible match in northwest Germany.
A back-and-forth game eventually saw Munich claim the three points after the referee controversially award the visitors a dubious penalty as Bayern won the derby 3-2.
Indeed, Brandt’s strike set the foundation for what was to be a thrilling match in Dortmund. Yet the midfielder’s night would come to a concerning end as the former Bayer Leverkusen star was stretchered off after a nasty clash of heads with Lucas Hernandez.
Arsenal were linked with Brandt at the start of the summer transfer window, with the Dortmund star one of the names Mikel Arteta and Edu were seemingly considering to fill in the creative void in the squad.
However, despite links, the Gunners opted to bring Martin Odegaard back to the club on a permanent deal, with the Norwegian playmaker and Emile Smtih Rowe taking up the creative responsibility in the squad this season.
And the decision has proven to be a smart one from Arsenal, with the Gunners currently sitting in fifth place in the Premier League table and the likes of Odegaard and Smith Rowe impressing under Arteta.
