Selena Gomez has addressed fan speculation that her NBA Finals post was directed at Taylor Swift, who attended Game 4 between the New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs.

Swift was seen courtside at Madison Square Garden alongside Alana and Este Haim, while Gomez, a longtime Spurs supporter, watched from home. After Gomez later commented “lol” on a post related to Swift’s Knicks appearance, fans were quick to frame it as a dig at her friend.

Gomez has since set the record straight.

Selena Gomez clarifies comment linked to Taylor Swift

Speaking via Pop Base, Gomez explained that the comment had nothing to do with Swift and was actually related to a bet she had made with friends.

“woke up and was sent so many texts. I would never insult my friends nor was it an insult. The comment was a reaction to the first slide on the page. Second I bet my friends on the game. The friends in the text chain I posted. I lost but was poking at my opponents, my friends. Believe it or not I do have other friends in my life. But quickly forget that most assume otherwise. also .. It’s a basketball game.”

Her comments came after she had also posted an Instagram Story joking about “sudden fans,” which some interpreted as a swipe at celebrity Knicks supporters following New York’s 107-106 comeback win.

Selena Gomez’s Spurs fandom is not new

Gomez’s connection to the Spurs goes back years. Raised in Texas, she has long supported the team, often seen in Spurs gear and even sharing throwback photos in their colors.

After Game 4, her frustration was more about the way the Spurs lost than anything else. San Antonio gave up a 29-point lead, the largest comeback in NBA Finals history, leaving them down 3-1 in the series.

For a lifelong fan, the loss was always going to hurt.

Gomez and Swift’s friendship goes back years

The idea that Gomez would intentionally take a shot at Swift does not fit their history. The two became friends in 2008, having met while dating Nick and Joe Jonas, and have supported each other through music releases, personal challenges, and public appearances ever since.

Swift’s appearance at Game 4 was a headline in its own right, especially with her wearing a “Stevie Knicks” shirt and sitting alongside the HAIM sisters and Mariska Hargitay.

Gomez, meanwhile, was simply backing her team and growing tired of every comment being turned into a headline about Taylor Swift.
