The New York Knicks are one win from a title, and OG Anunoby has given their Finals run a moment that now reaches beyond basketball.

New York lead San Antonio 3-1 after a 107-106 Game 4 victory, and Anunoby’s late tip-in has become one of the defining images of the series.

The Maradona comparison could easily have become too much. Anunoby made sure it did not, because his response was simple, respectful and properly restrained.

OG Anunoby showed respect with his Maradona response

Asked about the famous Maradona image, Anunoby did not try to turn the moment into a slogan. “Maradona is a legend,” he said.

He then added that the photo was “very cool” and “special”, which was exactly the right tone for a comparison that needed perspective.

He also reportedly called the comparison “iconic”, but the strength of his answer was restraint. He respected the image without trying to claim it.

Maradona’s image still reaches beyond football

This is where the story becomes bigger than one basket. The comparison only works if it is treated as symbolism, not sporting equivalence.

Maradona’s image belongs to football history. Anunoby’s tip-in belongs to a Knicks run that could deliver their first NBA title since 1973.

Those things are not the same. But the fact one image can frame the other says plenty about Maradona’s reach.

Anunoby handled that properly. He respected the reference, left the legend where it belongs, and let the moment speak for itself.
