Steve Nicol has expressed uncertainty at the idea of Steven Gerrard replacing Jurgen Klopp as Liverpool manager when speaking on ESPN.

The Liverpool legend was taking questions from social media, and he was asked what he thought of the job Gerrard was doing at Rangers as well as whether or not he thinks he could be the next man in at Anfield after Klopp’s tenure comes to an end.

Nicol was more than happy to praise Gerrard for his performance at Rangers, but he wasn’t too keen on the idea of him taking up the mantle at Anfield.

“He’s been doing a good job, when he took over Rangers were absolutely miles away from getting anywhere near Celtic,” Nicol said.

He would go on to express doubt over his ability to make the leap from Scottish football to the top-end of the Premier League

“Now, it’s a bit of a leap to go from the Scottish Premier League to Liverpool, I’m not saying it’s possible, but it seems a little unlikely.

“I would assume that he would be better suited to come in and be an assistant or something like that and then become the manager.”

The idea of Gerrard replacing Klopp has been around for some time now.

Klopp himself has stated stating that he wants the Anfield hero to take over from him, and while it’s a nice idea, Nicol may be right with his view.

The SPFL and the Premier League are two different beasts, and managers like Dick Advocaat and Alex McLeish prove that it’s not an easy jump to make.

Advocaat and McLeish have four SPFL titles between them, but in England they faltered.

Advocaat’s short spell in the Premier League ended with him resigning from Sunderland while they were in the relegation zone.

Meanwhile, McLeish’s Premier League CV consists of being relegated with Birmingham before having a disastrous spell with Aston Villa that ended with his sacking.

Gerrard may well prove to be a good manager in time, but Nicol is spot on when he says it’s a big leap between Rangers and Liverpool.
