Scotland and Aston Villa star John McGinn is wanted by Liverpool this summer after impressing for club and country – and a move to Anfield could earn Scottish Premiership side Hibs as much as £7.5million.

According to The Athletic, Liverpool want Villa to drop their reported £50million transfer fee for McGinn but with Hibs set to pocket 15% of any fee, that could rake them in one of Scottish football’s biggest ever fees.

Manchester United have also been linked with a move for McGinn, but Georginio Wijnaldum’s move to Paris SG this summer has left Jurgen Klopp looking for more midfield cover – and McGinn is said to have “impressed” the German.

McGinn put in three strong performances for Scotland at Euro 2020 as Steve Clarke’s side were knocked out in the group stages and the former Hibs maestro has only added to his ever-growing reputation.

Although an Aston Villa exit is far from certain for McGinn this summer, Hibs looks as though they will be quids in when he does eventually move on from Villa Park.

McGinn is the ideal replacement for Wijnaldum at Anfiield

McGinn played in 37 of Villa’s 38 Premier League games last season and the Scotland star’s high energy midfield showings were a big positive for Dean Smith’s side.

It’s easy to see why Klopp would view him as a potential replacement for Wijnaldum – and Hibs will be praying that the Liverpool boss pulls the trigger on a move for McGinn.

If he does, Hibs boss Jack Ross will no doubt be right on the phone to recruitment chief Graeme Mathie figuring out just how much he can spend on new signings.
